How Janan and Evie met

How they met

It was when Janan and Evie decided to go to a Mission Trip at Phuket, Thailand that they became good friends. The mission trip to Phuket, together with five other mission team members was indeed the turning point in their lives. Through this unexpected encounter, Janan & Evelyn could now look back how faithful God has been in their lives.

The trip was a persevered mission that brought Evie and Janan together in a wonderful way in 2005. Persevered, because it was cancelled on the last few days of the mission preparations, but yet the team decided to "proceed" and make the paveway to Phuket despite of the challenges faced.

Something sparkled in Janan and Evie's eyes when they learnt to love the work of the Lord in Thailand. The LORD has put something in their hearts from the experience.

Not long after the mission trip, Janan and Evie (Evelyn's nickname) joined a young adult (YA)camp in DUMC, unplanned. God led them to the same group again. Before the camp, there were prayers for young adults in DUMC to find their life partners. It was one of the prayer items covered during a church prayer gathering prior to the camp. Pr. Daniel's wife, Aunty Doris prayed for all the young adults that time, hands in hands with all of the YAs.

At the YA camp, Janan was selected as the leader of JOY group, and Evie was the assistant leader. This gave them more opportunities to know each other better. During that significant season of singlehood, they fell in love with each other's fun loving personality, winsome smile, contagious laughter and joy! (Perhaps this is why their YA group that time was named as JOY group as well). The group consisted of a fantastic joyful bunch too...with much hidden potential in each of them. They acted and performed as a group, and it was a wonderful time together where they realised the talent & strength each could bring.

Not long after the camp, Janan invited Evie to his company's buffet outing. (Raya Season 2005). Then it was on Janan's birthday on the 22nd of Oct 2005 that he declared his love for Evie during his birthday party. It came as a real surprise (pleasant) to Evie when the declaration was made. They eventually started their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend on the 21st of Jan 2006.

Through the 2 years plus of courtship, their relationship is liken to a dance. They synchronised and swayed together with sweet steps of motion...lefts, rights, ups and downs. Through it all, the captain who steer their dance waltz is definitely an awesome God who has brought them together.

The turning point to tie the knot....

Janan proposed to Evelyn on the faithful day 14th of March 2008, (1-4-3) in conjuction with her birthday celebration during a subzone gathering. It was another memorable surprise for Evie.

Janan prepared a pre-recorded video of a wedding proposal, a beautiful diamond ring, a sweet bouquet of red roses, while he knelt down in the presence of their subzone members, and in front of Evie to ask the "Ultimate Question". He planned this with a few members in our cell groups and also with Pastor Seng Fei's support. (he is J&E's PMC counsellor too)

Pastor prayed a prayer of blessings for both Janan and Evie together with all our subzone members at the end of the wedding proposal. It was truly an unforgettable day!

Janan & Evie would like to thank everyone of you who has been a significant part of their journey of love...

The Wedding Proposal...

On bended knees Janan went....

It was on the faithful day of "14th of March" (Theme: I love you)...
(Trivia: why is 14 March linked to I love you? Answer at the bottom of this write-up).

Yes, on that date. Janan proposed to Evelyn. It was after a normal church cell group meeting cum birthday celebration. It was after the Word session, Janan asked all present to watch a very important video. The video, was pre-recorded earlier and with the help of Amanda and Jackie (yes, we owe you both a big thanks), and contained, amongst others, pictures of us, a live recording of 'the profession of love' and ended with a cliffhanger... *da da dum*

This was followed by the proposal proper. On his knees he went. On the sofa, she crouched. One was apprehensive. The other a bit nervous. Both were anticipating the moment, yet, both were unsure of what to expect next.

And so, the groom-to-be popped the question and offered the ring firmly. The bride-to-be answered affirmatively to the question and the ring was popped into her finger.
This was followed by a rapturous cheer from the crowd and as a final gesture, a bouquet of flowers was handed to the bride-to-be.

But enough about descriptions... let's read what the soon-to-be wed couple has to say about the moment:

Janan: Was I nervous?

Of course! Who wouldn't be? People who were present that day noticed that I was edgy throughout the entire night. Thankfully, there were a lot of pre-planning and pre-preparation... otherwise, I think I would have panicked beyond imagination!
On that day itself, plans were laid our carefully, get the flowers, don't forget the ring, try to remember the proposal script (which at the end, I did forget...but managed to pull-off an impromptu one) and try not to look nervous. All in all, I can't remember how it was done... but I think I must attribute it to a guiding God via the Holy Spirit and the support of friends who were around.

Thanks to all the friends and pastor's family for being there on that date and for making the event memorable. It was truly one that was much, much, much better than I anticipated and much, much, much to our delight that you were able to join us!
As for the video, when we shot it, we had to do it secretly. It was veiled in a timely manner by telling my fiance that the three of us were going to talk about the Chiangmai Mission Trip video shooting. (Actually, we talked only 1 minute about that after our video shoot!)
The thinking of the script was another matter. It took some very creative bursts of ideas plus some very good *ahem* last minute script changes by the directors. In any case, the video itself is worth more than a thousand bucks because there are a few 'uncut' scenes of me... doing some really funny stuff. We promise to show it on our wedding day and thereafter on this site. :)

Evelyn: Was I surprised?

Prior to the video that was going to be shown, I was anticipating an Easter home-evangelistic video. The show started with a countdown. It looked "strange" to have such a countdown but it still didn't occur to me that it's a special video. No hints of any proposal yet until when I heard my favourite song "I WILL BE THERE" by Steven Curtis Chapman being played, I started to realise that that video is customed-made just for me. ;) It started with group photos and then more and more of my pictures with Janan was being projected. It strucked my mind with an "awed" feeling of "Oh my God, what should I do now?" Could it be now?? In the midst of being nervous inside, I kept a "cool" and "like nothing happened" look (*chuckled*) until the part where Janan appeared in the video. It went "live" to my heart. I remained calm, until Janan walked out from somewhere holding a bouquet of roses at the end of the movie, as if everyone has made the way for him to come to me.

By then, many pair of eyes were on me... and us, and I was still preetty "stunned" and "speechless". In that magical moment, Janan expressed his heart out, and all I could remember is that He said I am someone very special, God's gift to him before He asked the "Ultimate question." It was an atmosphere of "Laughter" and moments of silence here and there as many twitched their ears among the crowd to hear the proposal message.

It was a jovial laughter night too despite the "tensed moment". So much laughter that my eyes also teared because of all the hard laugh. I had mixed feelings of tears and joy. =) I took some time to answer the "Ultimate Question" because of my "daze". ;) It's once in lifetime to say, "Yes, I do"....

Mind was still in a "daze" several minutes after that magical moment before I "digested" what was happening around me. Now, I figured out why there were so many digital cameras that nite! aha.. things began to crystalise.

All in all, I really appreciate the people who were with us on that night and together it marked a "significant" day of our lives. ;) Thank you for all who celebrate our love together and I'm looking forward to our BIG DAY with you as we build up towards the wedding day!
God Bless!

(Answer: 14 March = 14/3 = 1-4-3 = 'I l-o-v-e y-o-u' (number of alphatbets for I love you)

It was in conjuction with my 27th birthday celebration too, 17th March.... and also for all the March birthday babies in my cell group ie- Lay Guan (bestman-to-be) and Nic (potential photographer). =)

About Us

Here's a little biography about the bride and bridegroom to-be. Hoping that you know them better and deeper.

About Evelyn Kuang... a.k.a Evie

Evelyn is the youngest of 3 siblings. She grew up in Pontian, Johore. (She doesn't speak cantonese because she grew up watching S'pore channel! ) =p She pursued her tertiary studies in TENAGA NASIONAL UNIVERSITY with a full scholarship by TNB and has been working in TNB eversince she graduated until today. She is 27 this year and has just changed her job function from IT to PR, Media Relations of Corporate Communications in TNB. She finds it a challenging move but exciting journey of transition as she seeks the Lord in her niche in life.

Evelyn is also known as "Evie" in DUMC. She loves God very much. She is passionate about serving in Dew Crew (video) ministry, writing ministry, CG, and enjoys playing piano for events like weddings, prayer meetings, leaders' meetings, YA camps etc. She grew up in a Christian family and has always enjoyed serving as a pianist in Pontian, Joyful Grace Presbyterian Church.

She was active in the youth group since her teenage years. In her university years, she was actively serving as the keyboardist for the RAGE group(youth) of Kajang AOG. Besides playing the piano, she loves to play badminton and squash. She plays badminton every Monday with Janan and a group of happening people. Come to think of it, badminton is one of the activities that drew both Janan and Evie together. Exercise dating...heh.

She loves taking pictures with her Canon Ixus camera besides posing for one, she likes traveling, eating, sight-seeing and reflecting on God's beautiful creation. She loves to be cheery and laugh out loud and could be quite crazily excited with her friends. Her favourite colour are pink and purple (which shall be the theme colour of her wedding) *wink*. She likes puppies and has a collection of them (small soft-toys) in her new Proton BLM. She is a sanguine-phlegmatic and likes to be in the company of friends. She is a dog-lover and can't resist squeezing a cute puppy when she sees one! =pPeople always describe Evelyn as a cheerful, youthful, energetic and enthusiastic young lady. Being excited about things in life is a part of who she is and how God has wired her. She loves God very much. She desires to bring the joy of the Lord to people around her. According to her friends, she has a warm, bubbly, loving personality. The best thing that God brought to her life is having good friends and family around her whom she really cherish. Most of all for having Janan as her best-friend and soul-mate.

One of her favourite quotations is "I believe in the sun even though it is slow in rising. I believe in you without realizing. I believe in rain though there are no clouds in the sky. I believe in God even though he is silent. --Unknown"

About Janan Goh...

He is the eldest son and grandson from the Goh family and so naturally has a dominant personality. His only sister, Jehanne is six years his junior and they share a very close relationship together. (No really! I don't bully her that much...) *wink*

Living in PJ for all his life with his paternal grandparents, parents and with his sister, Janan enjoys the close proximity with his relatives and hardly travels during the festive season. At most, he journeys two roads down to his maternal grandmother's home for Chinese New Year.

Janan has served God for most of his life and is an active Christian living purposefully for God. During his youth days, he was very much part of the Chinese Methodist Church youth group - yes, it is in Mandarin - and very active in the Christian fellowship both in high school and in college. Thanks to the many Christians there, Janan also grew in the Lord as well.

Later on, he was blessed enough to further his studies in the UK at the University of Warwick to pursue his degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering (a mouthful...). He met many other international friends there and is exposed to all forms of culture and activity whilst in the UK and had the opportunity to travel as well.

After returning to Malaysia in 1999, he joined DUMC church and enjoyed serving with many different persons and ministries there... music and worship ministry, intercessory and prayer ministry, cell/zone leadership, training ministry, writing team... and even a short stint in the ushering ministry and a cameo for the punctuation ministry.

In terms of interest, well... Janan likes writing. Writing had taken on a new level in the past year as he finally wrote and published a book, Journeys of the Heart, and launched it (online) on 8 Aug 2008. This wouldn't have been possible without Evie, who helped design the cover below... (nice or not? Wanna buy a copy?) :)

He also actively writes for the Letticle Group, edits the e-newsletters for his church and recently added Asian Beacon, a Christian magazine, into his portfolio. Not only that, he loves writing e-mails but hasn't had the time or the knack for blogs... (except this one!) :)

In terms of profession, Janan became a Research Analyst with a non-profit organisation (INSAPR, formerly INSAP) for a year before moving on to KPMG, where he has served for nine wonderful years with caring and superb colleagues. No wonder, Janan hasn't moved on... ;)

He has also done other interesting stuff, including mission trips to Myanmar and Thailand, photoshoots and video recordings for TV and newspaper advertising, spoke in camps and young adult/youth groups, sang in concerts... and yeah... if you want to know more... well, just buy my book. *wink*

Okie... that's all, thanks for reading.

My saying is simple: Without God, nothing is possible. With God, nothing is impossible. :)
